

Sam passed away at his home in Mukilteo on October 6, 2010. He was born in Springfield, Ohio in October of 1941. He was the only child of Dr. Samuel Lloyd Corbin and Mrs. Inez Corbin both of whom preceded him in death. In that he and his Dad shared a name, Sam was given the nickname of "Corby" which stuck with him until he relocated to Seattle some 30 years ago. He is known to all in Seattle and throughout the Seattle Fire Department as Sam or Sammy.
Sam was honored to have played football for Woody Hayes at Ohio State University and he continued to enjoy the game throughout his life. He joined the Seattle Fire Department when he was almost 41 years old and reveled in the distinction of being the oldest fire recruit ever hired.
Sam was especially proud of his assignment as a Fire Inspector for 10+ of his 26 years of fire service. He was passionate about many things but he was especially passionate about his responsibility of ensuring that the fire codes that provided people with a safe place to live, work, and play.
Although he didn't always communicate his great sense of pride to others, Sam was immensely proud of being a member of the Seattle Fire Department.
His wife Janice of 31+ years was by his side throughout his rigorous battle with liver cancer, and was by his side when he passed away. Sam is survived by three children, a daughter - Lashell Woodson, and 2 sons, Carlton and Virgil as well a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. His extended family included his brother-in-laws Paul and Tim Ferrell, sister-in-law Becky Ferrell, and mother-in-law Dortha McComas, all of whom have been by his side throughout his battle with cancer.
The family is especially grateful to Dr. Todd Kooy of the University of Washington and Dr. Sam Taagen of Seattle. Both doctors are extraordinary medical professionals who are deeply committed to caring for their patients. Both men enjoyed bantering with Sam about football.
Sam was a great cook and looked every aspect of being a foodie. He never saw a gadget, whether for the kitchen or simply the latest technology in electronic communications that he didn't like.
