Shirley was born Feb 17, 1926 in Birmingham, Alabama, and grew up in Houston, Texas, where she was an excellent student and spent most of her time studying and performing dance and piano. Shirley received her BA from Rice University and earned her Masters in Music at Oberlin Conservatory, where she performed as a concert pianist. After college, Shirley returned to Houston, where she continued to play concerts. In 1947, she married Stanley Fleischmann, and in 1951, the couple moved to Seattle. Shirley raised her four children, Rosanne, Marilyn, Adrienne and Steven, teaching them all piano lessons from an early age, as well as many other private students, whom she guided through yearly recitals and competitions. Shirley was active in the Washington State Music Teacher’s Association, and a leader of the Eastside Chapter. She worked at supporting the Seattle Symphony and for years had mini concerts at her home for musicians traveling through Seattle. Shirley was a leading member of The Women’s University Club in Seattle, and was active at Temple de Hirsch Sinai, where she participated in many musical programs and played piano for numerous events. She gave of her talent often, and greatly enjoyed entertaining the elderly at the Kline Galland Home. Shirley loved beauty of every kind, was an accomplished calligrapher and, as she highly valued intellectual pursuits, was always an avid reader. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley, and is survived by her husband, David Schryver; by her children: Rosanne Lapan, Marilyn (Jim) Arensberg, Adrienne Ruth, and Steve (Patty) Fleischmann; by her grandchildren: Lisa and Dana Lapan, Bob (Teresa), Shelly, and David (Justine) Arensberg, Hannah and Jack Fleischmann; and by her great grandchildren: Sam and Daphne Arensberg. She is also survived by her two brothers, Irvine, of Savannah, and Elliott, of San Antonio.
