Shuit Moy Yee Lew was born in Toishan, Canton, China in the early 1920’s. She had an older brother who immigrated to Sacramento, CA. Her four nieces and nephews, who still live in Northern California, often made trips up to Seattle to visit their aunt. In 1970, her son and daughter-in-law Yim Ching Lew open the original Sun Ya Restaurant located on King St. She and the family worked at the restaurant for 25 years and finally retired in 1995. Shuit Moy accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized at Seattle Chinese Alliance Church in 1974. After retirement she actively served at the church, and often volunteered at Seattle Gospel Center. She was kind hearted, optimistic, and loved to be with the company of other people. She valued being thrifty and not wasteful because these values were ingrained in her as part of her upbringing. However, she was always generous with her heart. Anyone who knew her would say she always had a warm smile and was willing to help out with whatever was needed. She loved cooking for others, going on walks with her friends and attending church events. She was nearly a hundred years old when she passed away on March 3rd, 2018.
