Sonia passed away comfortably and peacefully on August 25, 2025 after courageously fighting colon and liver cancer. She was a devoted wife, mother, Lola, Tita, Ate/Comare and cherished by all who knew her.
Born in 1937 in Baler, Aurora, Philippines, Sonia grew up in a community grounded by family, faith, compassion, and service. She graduated from Mt. Carmel High School and went on to earn her degree in pharmacy from Centro Escolar University. With the permission of Mama Maria, Sonia who was full of hope and big dreams moved to Seattle, Washington; where her older brother, Dante, settled with his family. In 1970, she married Gil Camero and built a life together as they raised two children, Tina and Gil, Jr. Later in life, Sonia embraced her favorite role yet - that of doting Lola (grandmother) to Maida, whom she spoiled with affection, attention, and endless love.
A trained pharmacist, Sonia dedicated many years of service to the University of Washington's Hall Health Center Pharmacy, where she was respected not only for her clinical knowledge but for her gentle, caring presence with every patient and colleague she encountered. She retired as Assistant Director of the pharmacy after making innovative changes that brought their operation into the 21st century.
Sonia's faith was central to her life as an active parishioner at St. John Vianney and St. Matthew. A devout Catholic, she served as a Liturgical and Eucharistic minister and played a leading role in parish outreach and community-building efforts. She volunteered on mission treks, at summer bible camps and was instrumental in organizing Simbang Gabi celebrations, helping to preserve and share cherished Filipino traditions with the church community. Another legacy Sonia left behind was the art of rosary-making and the importance of praying the rosary. She used colorful beads to engage students and parishioners in a spiritual craft that combined prayer, creativity and connection. She gifted rosaries to many students at St. Matthew during Rosary Week and to young parishioners receiving First Communion. Throughout this ministry, Sonia enjoyed being creative while at the same time passing along the power of praying the rosary.
Beyond her devotion to her family and faith, Sonia was the life of every room she entered. She loved to host parties, attend celebrations and-more than anything-be the life of the party. Her hospitality was unmatched because she made everyone feel welcomed and cared for. Whether she was entertaining guests or dancing the night away, Sonia brought joy and light wherever she went.
Sonia's legacy is one of deep love, unwavering faith, service to others, and spirited joy. She will be lovingly remembered for her generous heart, her vibrant presence, and the countless lives she touched with grace and kindness.
May she rest in eternal peace.
