

Stanley O. LINGLE Stanley Orland Lingle was born January 3, 1914, in his grandpar ents' log house on their home stead near Roseau in northern Minnesota. He died from natural causes on January 29, 2010, at The Hearthstone Retirement Home in Seattle, Washington. He was 96.
During childhood Stan tenant- farmed with his parents, Glenn L. Lingle and Olga (Enger) Lingle on the harsh plains of eastern North Dakota. After 1922, while his father worked on highway construction, winter snowplow ing, and on the Great Northern Railroad, he completed his early schooling and graduated from high school in 1932. Stan then worked as a farm laborer to earn money for college until, resolving to be through with farming, he moved west in 1933 to attend Grays Harbor Community Col lege in Aberdeen, Washington. He qualified for the college hono rary, Phi Theta Kappa, and grad uated in 1935. Stan then entered the University of Washington as a junior, supported himself with a broad range of part-time jobs, and graduated in 1937 with a B.A. in economics and business. He then took a job as bookkeeper at the Grays Harbor Branch of the National bank of Commerce and obtained broad experience in bank operations during his 4.5 years there. He also met his wife- to-be, Margaret Pearl Ewart, in Aberdeen. In 1941 Stan enlisted in the U.S. Army and, after basic training, was accepted into Finance Offi cer Candidate School at Duke University, North Carolina. He also proposed marriage to Margaret.
On December 2, 1942, Stan graduated from OCS as a Second Lieutenant. On December 8 he and Margaret were married. At a base in Kingman, Arizona, he was promoted to First Lieuten ant and became Deputy Finance Officer. Subsequently he was Base Finance Officer with a staff of 13 at Carlsbad New Mexico Army Air Base, where he was promoted to Captain. In 1945-'46, at Camp Chaffee near Fort Smith, Arkansas, he signed thou sands of final checks for separat ing officers and enlisted men, then separated himself. He was promoted to major when he be came an officer in the reserves. Following his army discharge, Stan accepted a job in the Audit ing Department of the National Bank of Commerce, Seattle, where he worked for 30 years. He traveled extensively, auditing branches throughout Washington State as well as international offices in Los Angeles, New York City, London, and Hong Kong. In addition, he and Margaret raised their 3 children Craig S., Vicki K., and Bruce G. Lingle. Stan partici pated actively in the Boy Scouts with his sons. He took his family on camping trips in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Yosemite Valley. During his annual vaca tions he and Margaret enjoyed travels to Tokyo, Hawaii, the British Isles, and Europe. Stan retired as an officer in audit ing in 1976 from what by then had become Rainier Bank. Margaret also retired then from teaching; together they traveled in the South Pacific including visits to Tahiti, New Zealand, and Austra lia. They also traveled in the U.S. and Canada. They enjoyed many winters in Mesa, Arizona. In 1999 Stan and Margaret sold their house and moved into The Hearthstone Retirement Home in Seattle, where they had many friends. Stan was a good, kind, generous, and honest man. All who worked with him and his many friends and relatives liked him, held him in high esteem, and trusted him implicitly.
He will be missed greatly by all of us. He is survived by his sons Craig and Bruce and daughter Vicki; daughters-in-law Diana Lingle and Jackie Murphy; and grandchildren Kristie, Kelli, Tanya, and Eric Lingle, and Andrew McIlroy.
