Sue Eung Ma was born on July 14, 1934 in Hong Kong to Lung Po Ng and Chung Kwai Yu. John (Johnny) Sek Fung Ma was born on May 18, 1933 in Toisan and immigrated to the US at the age of 13. He later joined the army in the 1950's with the intent of using military leave, so that he wouldn't have to pay for airfare, to go to Hong Kong to meet a wife. Sue and Johnny were matched made and had a 2 week courtship. They were married on Aug 19, 1957 in Hong Kong.
They started their family in 1958 with Lily, Ken, Earl and then Danial. Johnny, Sue, Lily, Ken and Earl lived in the Yesler Terrace Housing project until 1966 to save money for building a new restaurant. Sue and Johnny bought their first and only house in 1966 when Danial came along (lucky kid). In late 1972, the new family restaurant, Kong Chow, was completed in North Seattle.
Johnny passed away in 1973 and Sue, with limited English, took over managing the restaurant on a daily basis. Sue sold the restaurant in 1976 to devote her time to raising the children and cry-baby, Danial. After all the children were grown, Sue worked at the Kin On nursing home as a housekeeper for over 10 years. In the late 1990’s, Sue finally made the decision to take the naturalization exam to become a U.S. Citizen. She studied hard and with still limited English, she passed the naturalization exam on Oct 27, 1994. On January 17, 2023, Sue accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and was baptized on Jan 27th. Sue passed away on Feb 17, 2023.
She is remembered by her children and siblings. Daughter Lily married Ming Jue and their son, Justin, married Natalie Lam. Lily passed away in 2018. Youngest son, Danial, married Sylvia Wong and their children are Jaden and Ellis. Sue’s siblings are Lillian, Ivy, Gloria, Phemie and Kenneth.
