

Sumio Nagano was born in Nagasaki Prefecture in Japan on January 1947. He grew up in Okayama Prefecture until he was 9 years old and then moved to the United States settling in Seattle. He learned English quickly and graduated from Garfield High School. After high school he was drafted into the army during the Vietnam war.
After he left the army, he went to the University of Washington and graduated with a degree in Economics and started his long career at Boeing.
He married Atsumi in 1991. She was a childhood neighbor and friend, and they spent many vacations in Japan mainly staying in her home in Okayama.
Sumio enjoyed the outdoors and exercising. Favorite activities included hiking and mushroom hunting where he searched for matsutake (pine mushrooms) and chanterelles.
Sumio was an avid golfer for over 50 years. He was in a golf club at Boeing and continued with several golf groups through the years. He played golf in many courses in the US and abroad where he walked the course instead of using a cart. He and his golf friends played in many charity tournaments. He made his first hole in one at the Lake Spanaway Golf Course on June 8, 2023.
Sumio passed away in his home in Kent towards the end of September 2026, after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his devoted wife Atsumi, his brother Michael (Diane), and his sisters Anne (Richard) and Susan.
