Verna J. McGifford passed away on December 26 in Kirkland, WA, at the age of 96. She was born Verna Jane Beach on December 26, 1929, in Rolling Bay, Bainbridge Island, WA. She grew up on the island, where her family operated a farm and later a laundry and feed store in Winslow.
In August 1952, she married Edwin (Ed) G. McGifford, who preceded her in death, and together they made their home in Seattle, where they were long-time residents. Verna is survived by her two sons, Douglas (wife Katherine) and Charles (wife Amy), and her two daughters, Betty Gran (husband Wayne) and Kathryn, as well as six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Verna is also survived by her brother, David Beach (wife Marilyn).
As a young woman, Verna graduated from the Virginia Mason Hospital School of Nursing, later working as an RN at Swedish Hospital. She retired from nursing in 1969 and ran a children’s day care for a number of years.
Verna enjoyed sewing, crocheting, playing the piano, gardening, reading, spending time with family, and taking trips with her husband in their RV.
A long-time member of Lake City Presbyterian Church, she was guided by her steadfast faith to live a life of kindness, selflessness, and compassion toward others. Her deep devotion to her family, both immediate and extended, was always at the heart of who she was. She was a kind soul and will be greatly missed.
