Vi decided that Saturday, May 22, at 1:00 pm, would be the perfect time to dance with her husband Joe, again. Craig (her son) was holding her hand, playing Big Band music in the background when she took two final breaths and joined her husband for the dance they had been waiting for.
Dancing is what brought them together. Vi was living in a boarding on Phinney Ridge and was engaged at the time, when she met Joe. She set Joe up with her best friend for a double date. They were all out dancing and decided to switch partners. That was it…she told us that is when she fell in love with Joe. She eventually broke off her engagement with her fiancé but he did not accept the ring back. When Vi and Joe got married, Vi took that engagement ring and had the diamond put into Joe’s wedding ring. He proudly wore it until his transition on December 27th 1978. Vi never dated again because she said once you’ve had the best, what else is there?
Vi was born to Alfred and Josephine Stundahl on February 21st, 1923, in Flom Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, her son, Joe, her three brothers (Sylvey, Delly and Vernon Stundahl) and dear friend, Dora. Dillon.
Vi is survived by her two kids, Jolene and Craig; her daughter-in-law Chris; her two grandchildren, Jeff and Kyle; her two great grandchildren, Joshua and Emily; and her sister-in-law Lillian Stundahl, who lives in Circle, Montana.
After her dad died of TB at the age of 32, the family moved to Twin Valley, Minnesota, where she grew up and graduated from high school in 1941. Her mom remarried that same year and they moved to Circle, Montana.
While in Circle, Vi worked as a waitress and later found work at the Montgomery Ward store. She and a friend decided to leave for Seattle in search of more opportunities and was able to quickly find work at an insurance company in downtown Seattle.
Vi and Joe were married in 1948, had three kids and raised their family in Seattle.
Her husband survived a massive heart attack when he was 41 years old, so she went to work for Boeing as a buyer until 1970. She was laid off during the recession in the area. There was even a billboard asking the last person to leave Seattle was to turn the lights off.
In 1972, Vi started working at Shoreline Community College. She really enjoyed working with the staff, faculty and loved helping the students. She finally retired in 1993, at the age of 70.
She went on to do volunteer with PTA, at Helpline, Seattle Musical and Altar Guild (Prince of Peace Church).
Vi was able to find time to travel. She took a trip with her husband Joe and Joe’s mother Rose, to Croatia, to visit his relatives. They took in the beautiful landscape of the country and coastline; they enjoyed the visit with Joe’s relatives and heard many stories about the WWII invasions that bombed villages. They also saw the memorials that had been constructed in honor of all that had been lost.
Vi was also able to enjoy taking more trips with friends and family to many different places. She travelled to Las Vegas, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Washington D.C., Branson, Europe and taken numerous cruises. Vi loved to play cards and had belonged to a pinochle group which met twice a month.
Mom never met a stranger, just potential good friendships. She was happiest when she had company, out with friends or shopping. She just wanted to be around people and had a diverse group of great friends. She was ahead of her time. She was frugal but was generous with others. A lot of people will miss her very much, but like dad said before he passed, “it will be like tomorrow when I see you again…”
Thanks for all your love and support!
We will miss you dearly, mom!!!
See you “tomorrow…”
