Violette Jane Fladland passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord on October 28, 2022 at the age of 93 at Ashely Pointe Home. She was born on May 20, 1929 to her parents, Peter and Jennie Voth in Mountain Lake, MN, a small Mennonite farming community. She was raised in a loving Christian family with her older brother Norman and younger sister Darlene. She would tell the grands and great grands of how their horse “King” would take them to school during the winter by sleigh, and how she would read by a kerosene lamp. One of her favorite things to do on the farm was drive the tractor, and would brag that her corner turns were perfect!
Vi soon showed an early talent for music and became an accomplished trumpet player. While still in high school, she was privileged to play in a trumpet trio (including her brother Norman) all over the Midwest, and were the featured trumpet fanfare opening for Billy Graham Crusade events.
After HS graduation, she attended Augsburg University and there she met the love of her life, Donald Fladland. They married September 6, 1949, and raised four daughters: Charee, Jane, Mary and Miriam. She was active in Trinity Lutheran Church, Mpls.MN and there made lifelong friendships. Throughout years of being a wife and mother, she traveled the world with her “Evangelist husband” as they spread the gospel of Christ’s love. When they moved to Seattle, and Don worked for Lutheran Bible Institute, their home became a hub of activity for youth from all parts of the world. “Vi” was always the warm and gracious hostess, providing food including her famous brownies with melted Hershey bars frosting! When Don was recruited to be President of Lay Ministry Training Center (LMTC),they returned to Mpls for the next ten years. Vi was Administrative Assistant and an expert at organization, picking up loose ends for everyone, especially “Don”.
In retirement years they returned to Seattle where they were thrilled to be closer to family. Vi loved the beautiful view of Puget Sound and Olympic Mts, and even after moving to Ashely Point, she often talked of how she missed it. Vi was an amazing and loving caregiver throughout Don’s battle with Parkinson's.
After Don passed away in 2011, Vi met and later married Thomas Pugh, a retired Naval Pilot. They found companionship for seven years and enjoyed many good times together. Vi loved listening to Thomas’s flying adventures and was proud of his service to our country.
Violettes’ love of her family was always foremost and whenever she could was involved in their lives, especially her 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. She fondly became “Gigi” and they all loved her dearly. Though she will deeply missed we know we will see her again.
She is preceded in death by her parents, sister, brother, and husbands.
She is survived by daughters: Charee Wagner (Paul), Jane Nager (Peter), Mary Fladland-Hernandez (Silverio), Miriam Turner (Richard), grandchildren Jeremy Gies (Angela), Jeffrey Gies (Kelly), Jonathan Gies (Jennifer), Megan Helms (Jace), Jennie Dwyer (Willie), Talia Hernandez-Fladland, Matthew Turner (Kate), Corey Turner (Jamie), Zachary Turner, and great grandchildren Isabel, Evan, Kaylee, Fiona, Cash, Wyatt, Penelope, Rylee, Brayden, and Arley.
