William Lawrence Carpenter, Larry to all who knew him, passed away on Thursday, November 20, 2025, after a brief battle with cancer.
Larry was born in Seattle, Washington, on October 5, 1943 to William & Dorrit (Hildebrandt) Carpenter. He worked hard so he could play hard. At an early age he spent Saturdays mowing lawns at the school near his home and playing baseball. Later, he worked nights at the Kingdome so he could watch baseball games at his father’s small business, Custom Surveys. He eventually took over the business, ran it with his wife, Karen, and later with his son, Loren.
Larry and Karen met at college in Seattle. She introduced him to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and they married in the Logan Utah Temple in 1965. They started their family while he was finishing his degree in Psychology at Central Washington University, where he also had a baseball scholarship.
Larry was an avid fisherman, often taking the family on outings to streams and lakes throughout Washington. Many early mornings were spent in a rowboat in the Puget Sound, trolling for salmon. Later in life, he took up golf. He played in local tournaments and was a willing and patient coach to anyone who wanted to play. His last golf game was in September at his favorite course on Bainbridge Island.
Larry had great faith and served in his Church in several capacities. He was a great missionary within his ward, seeking out and helping the widows and those less fortunate. He and Karen often ministered together; eventually, he ministered Karen full time.
Larry and his family lived in Seattle before moving to Bainbridge Island. After several years, he purchased his father’s property in Kingston, where he and Karen (and all visitors) could enjoy the waterfront views.
Larry had a great relationship with his grandchildren, forging special bonds with each. They were all his favorites, and he loved each dearly, spending time with them whenever possible.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mikey Carpenter, and his brother Jack Carpenter.
Larry is survived by his wife Karen Covington Carpenter, his children: Leslie (Marcio) Gimenes, Kelly (Jim) Mosher, Loren (Cynthia) Carpenter, Kimberly (Jeff) Calender, and Karla (Jason) Harper, 16 grandchildren, and one great grandson, as well as siblings Nancy and Carolee.
