Wing Huey Lee, 85, passed away peacefully due to natural causes on November 30, 2020, in Renton, WA. He was born on November 23, 1935, in Toison, Kwangtung, China. He lived with his mother in China until he was about 15 years old. Then he immigrated to the United States to join his father. He was part of the last wave of immigrants to pass through Ellis Island in New York City. After spending a few months on Ellis Island, a period he always said was a very lonely time, he met his father and lived with him in small town Barre, Vermont. He attended Spaulding High School, and a kind teacher helped him to learn English and catch up in his studies. After graduating high school, he served two years in the U.S. Army. A highlight of his time in service was being stationed in Germany around the same time Elvis Presley was there. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he attended the University of Vermont for a short while.
A few years later, Wing traveled to Hong Kong where relatives introduced him to Mai L Chan. They had a short courtship, and then married in 1965. He helped his wife to immigrate to the United States. They lived in Boston, MA, where Wing could easily find work in Chinese restaurants and Mai worked as a seamstress. Both of their children, David and Vivian, were born in Boston.
In 1978, they moved to Seattle, WA, to be closer to Mai’s family. Wing worked as a cook in a few Chinese restaurants in the greater Seattle area, but eventually found a steady job with reasonable hours at Uwajimaya, a local Asian grocery store in Chinatown. He worked there for many years as a clerk in the produce department until his retirement in 2000.
Wing was a loving husband and devoted father, often tending to his family’s needs before his own. He also took great care of his mother, who had also immigrated to the States. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, and eating delicious food. He also enjoyed going to church, attending a fellowship group, and spending time with friends.
Wing was naturally a kind and generous person. He often gave rides to friends, bought lunches for others, and hosted out-of-town guests in his own home and treated them to sightseeing and dinners around town.
Wing was preceded in death by his father and mother, Cho Kwong Lee and Chui Yuet Wong Lee, and his younger brother, Cho E. Lee. He spent his last moments in the company of his wife, Mai Lee, son David Lee, daughter and son-in-law Vivian and Victor Chow, and grandchildren Timothy, Rebecca, and Tobias Chow.
Funeral service will be held at Evergreen-Washelli Funeral Home at 11111 Aurora Ave. North, Seattle, WA 98133, on Saturday, December 19, 2020, at 12:30pm. Due to current health and safety restrictions, the service will be limited to family only.
