He lived most of his life in Seguin and attended St. Joseph Catholic School and Seguin High School. As a Matador, he lettered in football, track and was named team captain his senior year. He attended Texas Lutheran College (TLC) and played football. In his second year at TLC he volunteered for the army and the air force with his best friend William Boehl from Cuero, Texas who also played football. He served for three years in the army and air force and then returned to TLC to continue for a semester.
He continued his education at the Dallas School of Embalming. After graduation, he returned to Seguin doing his apprenticeship at Goetz Funeral Home working with his father Alfred, Sr. In 1957, he married the love of his life, Mary Barecky at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Aransas Pass. Alfred and Mary were blessed with three sons, Timothy, Jeffrey, Scott and a daughter, Angela Kay who passed as an infant.
He served Goetz Funeral Home for more than 30 years and owned the Kolbe Flower Shop, Plaza Shoes and Patek Grocery Store. He was an active member of the Seguin Volunteer Fire Department, Knights of Columbus, Seguin Kiwanis and the American Cancer Society Road to Recovery Program.
Alfred is preceded in death by his parents and his infant daughter. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Mary Barecky Kolbe; sons Tim (Cheryl), Jeff (Margaret) and Scott (Jennifer); grandchildren, Anthony, Kathryn, Megan, Jay, Nicholas, Mason, Kyle and Lauren Kolbe.
A Visitation will be held at St. James Catholic Church on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 from 4:00 p. m. to 8:00 p. m. with a Rosary at 7:00 p. m. Funeral Mass will be on held on May 8, 2013 at 10:00 a. m. at St. James Catholic Church, with Interment to follow at St. James Catholic Cemetery.
