John Francis Hourican, 79 of Indian Rocks Beach, FL died peacefully in his home, April 23, 2018. John is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, M. Patricia, his four children, Peggy Thomas (Joe), Patty Worth (Andy), Fr. John Hourican, pastor of Church of the Holy Spirit, and Maureen Hutton (Robert). He is also survived by nine grandchildren (Meagan, Brendan, Deidre, Erin, Heather, Claire, Robert Jr., Catherine, and Thomas), his sister Catherine and brothers Mike, Tom (Kathy) and Jim (Joan).
A native New Yorker, John graduated from St. Sebastian grammar school, Bishop Loughlin High School and St. John’s University. He earned his MBA and Masters in Computer Science from the University of Arkansas. As a talented athlete, he led baseball and football teams to NYC championships and proudly wore his Hudson Champs watch. He worked for W.R. Grace in New York City and in Memphis for 30 years transitioning from accounting to information systems. After retiring from W.R. Grace, John was immediately hired by Mayor Hackett to serve as the Director of Information Systems for the City of Memphis. He continued in that position under Mayor Herenton, serving for 11 years before retiring to Florida. In 1999, he was named Information Technology Executive of the Year. John enjoyed coaching youth football for Shelby Youth Sports and He was a daily communicant at St. Peter Catholic Church in Memphis, serving for years on their Finance Council. He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, member of the Serra Club and the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre. He served as President of the West TN Learning Disability Association as well as boards of several other charitable agencies. As a retiree, John was a daily communicant of St. Jerome Catholic Church in Largo, FL and shared his faith with their CCD. Never one to sit still, he served on the Finance Committee of the City of Indian Rocks Beach until his death.
Visitation was held Sunday, April 29th at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Memphis from 4-7 p.m. A Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, April 30th at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Spirit, with interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery.
Memorials are requested for St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen in Memphis or charity of the donor’s choice.
