Born on July 29, 1942, in Havana, Cuba, she lived a life centered on family, resilience, devotion, and quiet strength. She was married to the love of her life, Luis Román Campuzano, for 61 years, until his passing in 2023. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised a close and loving family.
Betty was the beloved daughter of Adela and Pedro Fernández and the loving sister of Miriam and Liliana. She was raised in a close-knit Catholic family whose traditions and values remained an important part of her life. While living in Cuba, she attended college with plans to become a surveyor before her family was forced to leave the country. She possessed a creative and technical mind, gifts that reflected her curiosity and intelligence.
In 1960, she immigrated to the United States, first settling in New York City before making her home in Wichita, Kansas, where she began raising her family and building the foundation of her life in this country. Born before the rise of communism in Cuba, she carried with her a deep appreciation for freedom and remained proud of her Cuban heritage throughout her life.
Family was always at the heart of Betty’s life, and she found her greatest joy in watching her family grow through the generations. She was a proud and devoted mother to her children: Pedro (Sandy), María (Matt), Angela, and Luis (Tara). She was a cherished grandmother to Alecia (Nate), María “Mia” (José), Matt Jr., Whitney (Sam), Cassidy, Zachary, Dalton, Petra, Graciella, and Adela. She was also a deeply loved great-grandmother to Halena, Matty, Tily, Cruze, Rome, Ella, Milo, Ellis, and Valentina (due March 2026), as well as many lovingly embraced “adopted” great-grandchildren who were welcomed into her heart and treated as her own.
Betty was known for her dedication, reliability, and strong work ethic. She worked for 15 years at Crabby Bill’s and later spent 20 years at Mid Atlantic Finance, where she earned the respect and admiration of her colleagues. Among friends and coworkers, she was remembered as a kind and genuinely caring person, whose beautiful smile had a way of making everyone feel welcome and valued.
Betty lived her life with grace, humility, and unwavering love for her family. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched, the traditions she passed down, and the generations who will continue to carry her love forward.
The loss of Betty leaves a space in the hearts of her family that can never be filled, yet her love will continue to surround them every day. She was the quiet strength, the comforting presence, and the steady heart of her family. Her love did not end with her passing — it lives on in every generation she nurtured and in every life she touched.
