

Cal was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey on April 29, 1945. He was the son of the late Alfred Hunkele Sr and Vivian Kuhlthau Hunkele. He was preceded in death by his high school sweetheart Dotti, wife of 58 years in June 2023 and his older brother Alfred, who passed away January 2015.
Cal graduated from Hightstown High School and later from the business school of Ryder University in New Jersey. He joined a fledgling North Carolina National Bank (NCNB) based in Charlotte in 1970. He moved to Dallas, Texas in 1988 to become the CFO of the upstart NCNB Texas which became NationsBank before ultimately becoming Bank of America. After leaving Bank of America, he continued to work in the corporate investment industry for a few more years before retiring and then relocating to Calabash, NC in 1997.
He was an avid bass and surf fisherman who also enjoyed boating & fishing along the coast, watching NFL football & ACC basketball, and managing his investments. Cal and Dotti loved traveling, especially taking cruises and visiting the island of St. John. Lastly, they loved raising their 3 miniature schnauzers over the many years.
He is survived by the following: His eldest son Dean Hunkele & wife Kim of Sunset Beach, NC, their daughter Kaleigh and grandson Jackson; his son Brad Hunkele & wife Marie of Summerfield, NC, their 3 daughters Holly, Joy, & Noelle; another older brother, Harry Hunkele of Etowah, NC; two younger sisters, Pam Love of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Judi Barlow of Allentown, NJ; and finally his third schnauzer, Cooper.
The family will receive friends on Thursday January 8, 2026 from two o’clock until four o’clock in the afternoon at White Funeral and Cremation Service Shallotte Chapel, 3660 Express Drive, Shallotte.
