It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of David Clark Hughes on June 22, 2026, at the age of 72. David was born on April 3, 1954, in Durham, North Carolina, to Lou Ellen Rogers Hughes and Clifford Gray Hughes (both predeceased).
Above all, David was a devoted husband to his beloved wife of 25 years, Melissa “Misty” Hughes, and a loving father to Gray (Lauren), Anna, and Chelsea. His greatest joy was being a husband, father, and grandfather to Mya, Demi, and Nova. He was also a loving brother to Leigh Smith, Kimberly Hughes, and the late Ellen Hughes. His beloved dogs—Henry Hog, Katie, Abby (all predeceased), and Mattie (surviving)—were cherished members of the family.
David found joy cheering on the Tar Heels as a lifelong fan and peace on the golf course as an avid golfer. He will be remembered for his determination, confidence, strength, generous heart, and willingness to help others. His steady presence and deep love for his family left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort knowing David’s love lives on in every lesson he taught, every laugh he shared, every UNC game that brings family together, every round of golf played in his honor, and every cherished memory.
He will be forever loved, deeply missed, and never forgotten.
A small memorial service will be held at Shady Grove United Methodist Church, 1705 Shady Grove Road, Providence, NC on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 1:00 p.m.
