Don was born on October 4, 1938, in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, to the late Archie McInnis and mother, Naomi. He honorably served his country in the United States military, spending a year in Korea during the Korean War. Those who knew him recognized that his quiet strength, discipline, and steady presence were shaped in part by that period of service.
On October 20, 1963, Don married the love of his life, Rebecca “Becky” McInnis. Just weeks before his passing, they celebrated 62 years of marriage; a lifetime of partnership, devotion, and unwavering commitment to one another.
Don is survived by his wife, Becky McInnis; his daughters, Rhonda (Joe) Faircloth and Susan (Mike) Shoe; grandchildren Heather, Conor (Jessica), Spencer, Christy (Mike), Brandie (Corbin), Kyle (Brittany); and great-grandchildren Evelyn, Ardan, Cameron, Cooper, Carson, Bellamy, and Asher. Don is further survived by his sister, Linda (Bobby) Wood, and his brother, Bill McInnis. He was preceded in death by siblings John, Fran, Neil, and Jean.
For many years, Don played and coached slow-pitch softball with a tight-knit team of close friends. Becky was the scorekeeper, and together they traveled all over for games and tournaments, building lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories. Don’s dedication, skill, and love for the game will be recognized when he is inducted into the The United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) Hall of Fame, a milestone that brought him immense pride.
Don lived his life with his hands and his heart. He loved to spend time with his family, work in the yard, and build things…he was a local legend for his meticulous outdoor Christmas displays, which grew more elaborate and beautiful every year. He spent each spring planning improvements, and the whole family played their part by replacing lightbulbs, untangling extension cords, and dragging wired figurines up and down the attic stairs each season. He was happiest when he had a project to complete, a place to go, and his family all around him.
What defined Don most was the way he loved. He was steady, selfless, and deeply loyal. He gave without hesitation, without keeping score, and without expecting anything in return. His presence made the people around him feel safe, seen, and intensely loved…he never met a problem he couldn’t fix, or a person he wouldn’t help.
A celebration of Don’s life will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, November 22, 2025 at New Hope Baptist Church, 3675 Rosehill Road, Fayetteville NC 28311. The family will receive friends from 10:00am until 11:00am.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes acts of kindness in Don’s honor - the kind he offered.
