Mrs. Register was born in Ash, North Carolina on September 8, 1942, daughter of the late Elmer Lee Smith and Evie Milligan Smith. After raising her family in Brunswick County, she married Wilbur Register of Council, North Carolina where they made their home. It was there she worked with her husband as owners of Register’s General Merchandise. Together they enjoyed working in the store, making it a gathering place not only for shopping, but for swapping stories and catching up on what was happening in the community. She was a longtime member of Mt. Horeb Presbyterian Church and continued to attend until her health declined. Mrs. Dora made many friends, loved going to lunch with her ladies group, and attending craft fairs. Her friends knew if they were sick or just lonesome, she would be there with a listening ear and one of her delicious dishes she always made with love. She loved to share the many poems and songs she learned throughout her lifetime. Not only did she enjoy cooking, but also working in her yard, growing vegetables to share with the community, and shopping. A devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother could easily describe her as she adored all her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of eighteen years, Wilbur Register, grandson, Matthew Heibel, step grandson, Nicholas Simpson, siblings, Evelyn Reeves, Mavis Woodard, Joe Smith, and Wanda Ayers.
Survivors include her children, Jamie Stone and wife Sheila of Shallotte, Lisa Heibel and husband Mark of St. Louis, Missouri, Mamie Caison and husband Miller of Ash, Tim Stone of Shallotte, and Kevin Stone and wife Donna of Ash; 13 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; one brother, Charles Smith of Ash; and one sister, Mercedes Coleman of Latta, South Carolina.
