Eric A. Wieda, 83, of Sunset Beach, NC, passed away on May 20, 2018. Eric was the first born child of Alfred Ernst Wieda and Florence Walters Wieda of Brooklyn, NY, where he lived until 1953, when at age 18, he enlisted in the US Navy and served to 1957. In 1960 he received a BA degree from the State University of NY at Oswego where he met and married the week following their graduation, Carol Goss of Fulton, NY, his wife of 58 years.
The couple settled in New Jersey to begin their teaching careers. Eric received his Master of Science degree in 1964 from the Newark State College, renamed in 1973, the Kean College of NJ. They resided in Fanwood and Scotch Plains, NJ, where they raised their two children, daughter, Erin Susan and son, Eric John.
During the 36 years Eric resided in NJ, when he was not involved in his teaching duties and mentoring countless students, he was in demand for his master craftsmanship and expert woodworking skills which he lent generously to the benefit of many charitable projects. Eric also undertook major and minor home remodeling projects, as well as specialty projects in cabinetry and wood carving for many friends, family and neighbors in NJ over the years. Eric was held in highest regard and respected for his work ethics, integrity, and generosity of his time and expertise, especially, in solving home project problems. While in NJ, Eric took up the game of golf and for many years Eric and his family enjoyed being members of the Suburban Golf Club of Union, NJ.
In the year of 2000 the couple relocated to NC in Sunset Beach, part of the Sea Trails Golf Resort. New friendships were made and regular golf outings were enjoyed by Eric with his close group of fellow golfers. Traveling adventures were enjoyed and became more frequent after moving to NC with land trips and many cruises, taking them to all corners of the world, including a photographic safari to the plains of South Africa where Eric was thrilled by the sights of the majestic wild animals. Eric was a lover of all animals and was devoted especially to projects aimed at improving and protecting the lives of elephants.
In addition to his wife, Carol and his two children, Erin Susan and Eric John, he leaves behind his three sisters, Elizabeth Leddy, Santa Barbara, CA, Susan Souhan, Seneca Falls, NY, Karen Wieda Mullen (Dennis), Richland, WA, and his sister-in-law, Jonelle Goss Bashore, MD, La Quinta, CA, and several nieces and nephews and cousins.
For the many people who knew Eric, they recognized a quiet Gentleman who led a principled life, showing kindness and unselfishness to family, friends and strangers alike. For those who were closer and who loved Eric, they have lost their Superhero, a man who in these most recent years demonstrated unfathomable strength, grace and quiet determination, each and every day right up to his final day.
In honor of Eric's final wishes the arrangements will be private.
