Gene was born in Akron, Ohio to Eugene and Annabel Wiandt, the youngest of four children. He attended school in Akron and graduated from Archbishop Hoban High School. In 1979 he married Shirley Caplinger and together they raised two daughters, Jennifer and Melanie.
Gene worked for the family business, Acme Pattern Works, and after the death of their father, took over the business in partnership with his brother. In later years he worked at The Akron Foundry and made many good friends among his coworkers. He was a Journeyman Patternmaker
and very much enjoyed his work.
After retirement, he and his wife moved to North Carolina where they had previously spent many happy years vacationing. They were minutes from their favorite beaches of Ocean Isle and Sunset Beach. For the first several years, they walked on the beach every day, enjoying the beauty of God's creation. He also enjoyed cruising the intercoastal waterway in his pontoon boat.
In early 2021, he decided he had been idle long enough. He started working part time in the deli at the Ocean Isle Publix. He met many wonderful people there, and again, made many good friends among his coworkers. He loved his work family.
Gene was preceded in death by his mother and father, and is survived by his wife Shirley of 42 years, his daughters Jennifer Hayden (Tim), Melanie Rathbun (Tom), his brother Bill Wiandt (Linda), his sisters Pam Cartwright and Donna Grigas (John). He is also survived by his mother and father-in-law, Kenneth and Audrey Gladieux, grandchildren Christian (Abby), Noah, Alaina, Elisa, Kaela, Micah, and Logan, many nieces and nephews and extended family. He is also survived by his dear and wonderful friends. The family cannot express how grateful we are for the love and support we have received during this difficult time.
If so desired, donations may be made in Gene's memory to Reece's Rainbow, an organization that provides grants supporting the adoption of children with special needs.
Cremation has taken place, and Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
