Gennette Carter

She is survived by her children: Diana (Jay) Daniel of Salisbury, NC; Dean Carter of Mocksville, NC; Carol (Doug) Colbert of Ocean Isle Beach, NC; Jimmy (fiancée Angie) Carter of Mocksville, NC; and Wenona (Brad) Thompson of Boonville, NC. She also leaves behind 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Born on March 5, 1946, in Lumberton to the late Harles and Neava Spaulding Locklear, Gennette was a proud Lumbee woman whose love for family shaped every part of her life. She is also survived by her sisters, Gladys Pierce of Lumberton, NC; Peggy Cooper of Maxton, NC; Patsy Locklear of Greensboro, NC; brother Harvey (Jan) Locklear of Clayton, NC; sister-in-law Travisene (Johnny) Boger of Mocksville, NC; and brother-in-law Lionel Perreault of Lake Linden, MI.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Linda Locklear and Fayelene Perreault; brothers James Locklear and Mitchell Locklear; sisters-in-law Patricia Carter, Athalene Daniels, and Jayne Locklear; brothers-in-law Floyd Locklear, Clem Pierce, Durant Cooper, Larry Carter, and Lindy Daniels; daughter-in-law Sheila Carter; and grandson James Reavis.

Gennette loved her children and grandchildren fiercely. She instilled in each of them a love for family, a dedication to helping others, and the belief that you should never quit give up saying “can’t never could.” She treasured teaching cooking, crafts, and the art of sharing the warmest hugs and kisses.

Gennette embraced her calling as a mother and grandmother wholeheartedly. Protecting, loving, and spoiling her family were among her greatest joys. Through the years, she often became a mother and grandmother figure to many beyond her immediate family and deeply treasured those relationships. She especially cherished the bond she shared with her niece’s family, Merrill and Nikki Jones, Gracie, Grayson, and Noah.
