Born and raised in Allison, Pennsylvania on June 6, 1936, she was the fourth of nine children of the late James and Faye Raleigh.
She graduated from Carlow College and earned her Master’s in Education from the University of Maryland. While living with her sister in Oxon Hill, MD as an elementary school teacher, she met her husband William Marmura, and married in 1971. After taking time off to raise her sons, Janet returned to teaching and spent the next few decades at St Mary’s Elementary School in Alexandria, VA. She was a beloved teacher who taught English, Math and Algebra, eventually being promoted to Vice Principal.
After retirement, Janet and William built their home in Shallotte, NC and moved down fulltime in 2011. During her time there, she fully embraced her new home and community. After the death of William in 2014 after 43 years of marriage, she was grateful to have the support of her wonderful friends.
Janet lived life to its fullest and took great pride in everything she did from her work, cooking and baking and being a mother and grandmother and friend. She always pursued her passions from being a nun, playing music, learning Italian and traveling. After spending almost 5 years fighting cancer, Janet left life with “no regrets” and expressed her love for all her family and friends.
Janet is survived by her son Michael J. Marmura and wife, Stacey of Philadelphia, PA, son Matthew T. Marmura and wife, Tina of Cary, NC; four loving grandchildren, Julia, Thomas, Jake and Alec Marmura; three brothers Jim Raleigh of Twinsburg, OH, Richard Raleigh of Washington, PA, and Gregory Raleigh of Port Matilda, PA; and two sisters Charlotte Kaminsky of Alexandria, VA, and Marion Breccia of Newton, PA.
