OBITUARY

Jim Kraut

October 4, 1941January 24, 2020

James “Jim” Edward Kraut of Calabash, NC, - formerly of Berlin, CT, - passed away suddenly on January 24, 2020. He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Judith “Judy” (Devokaitis) Kraut, and his son, Kenneth Kraut, of New Britain, CT. He also leaves behind, - his Brother Charles Kraut and his sister-in-law Diane, of Berlin, CT, – his sister, Nan Doyle, of New Britain, CT, and - many nieces and nephews. Jim was a graduate of Saint Thomas Aquinas High School in New Britain, CT and Saint Michael’s College in Winooski, VT.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Kathryn (Lynch) Kraut, and his brother-in-law, James Doyle. Jim retired from the Hartford Insurance Group where he spent 25 years as a corporate trainer. He was an active member in the community, and belonged to the Berlin Lions Club, - the Italian Political Club, and – the Polish Political Club, where he served as a Permittee for many years. When he and Judy moved to Calabash, NC in 2010, Jim became active in the Calabash VFW Club (Veterans of Foreign Wars), and the local Elks’ Lodge. Jim was a die-hard NY Giants Football fan, along with being a fan of NASCAR and the UCONN (University of Connecticut) “Huskies” woman’s basketball team.

Sporting his trademark “Retro-Style, White, Handlebar Moustache,” everyone new Jim as a “Great Guy,” – one who touched many lives, and – one who happily went along with the many antics of his wife Judy.

Funeral services will be ten o’clock in the morning at Saint Brendan’s Catholic Church in Shallotte, NC on February 10, 2020. A Celebration of Life will also be held in Berlin, CT in the spring.

Jim’s great sense of humor, smile, and kindness, is a great legacy of the wonderful person he was. We will miss him more than words can say.

The Kraut family is my second family. Mr Kraut has played many roles in my life. He has supported me, yelled at me, comforted me and most of all accepted me. I will truly miss him and cherish our time together.

I worked with Jim at The Hartford Insurance Co. for a number of years. I enjoyed anytime I worked with him in the office as well as on the golf course at Pine Valley. We made it a definite date to play in the Polish American club's golf tournaments at Southington Country Club. He will definitely be missed by all who knew him.

Jim was a childhood friend of mine many years ago. We used to call him Jimbo at that time. I was saddened to hear of his passing. These were years in the 1940's just after the war was over. He had a wonderful family. His dad took us to my first automobile race at Cherry Park! I have loved cars ever since, and remember his brother had a 1939 Ford four door convertible. If my memory serves me correctly his mom worked at Pratt & Whitney and during the war was an original Rosey the riveter! Many fun times. Again, I am very sorry to hear of Jim's passing.

I am so saddened to hear of Jim's passing. I worked with Jim for many years at The Hartford. He was such a wonderful man, always made you smile, encouraged learning and doing your best. Back in those days, we were small, close knit and growing fast. Jim trained just about all of us in on capacity or another. He will never be forgotten and will always be remembered for such a kind and special man! Truly one of kind!
My condolences to Judy and the entire family.

Judy and Ken,

So sorry to hear of Jim’s passing. I like many had the pleasure of working with Jim at The Hartford. The greater pleasure was enjoying Jim’s company outside of work, at Pine Valley golfing (although I think the gang spent more time in the bar after golf than on the course), at the Kielbasa Open, and the Berlin Fair. If you wanted a good laugh or a smile, Jim was who you wanted to be with. Cherish all the wonderful memories of a life well lived. Karen
