Larry Lockwood passed on Tuesday, February 4th, after 89 years of life well lived. He attended school in Rochester, NY and Pittsford, NY and later graduated with a bachelor's degree from Syracuse University. Larry served in the United States Army for four years as part of the Third Berlin Crisis draft. Larry was stationed in France and Germany. It was very fitting that he built a 35-year career with Black and Decker/Dewalt tools as he was an extremely talented wood carver and so enjoyed his time creating in his impressive woodshop.
In 1967, Larry married Donna Joan DeMarse, and together they raised three children: Kathryn Giebel (1965), Stephen Lockwood (1968) and Marjorie Butler (1970). His career moved the family across the Midwest, including suburbs of Detroit and Chicago. Eventually, he retired from the Chicago office and then he volunteered as a Construction Coordinator for Habitat for Humanity for almost five years. Donna and Larry went on many travel adventures together, which always allowed him to work in some fishing, including Bermuda, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Alaska, Italy, France, and Costa Rica.
In 2001, Donna and Larry moved to Bolivia, North Carolina, to build their dream home on the Lockwood Folly River, which brings the tidal patterns of the Intracoastal Waterway and Atlantic Ocean. In the 1980s, they found a plot of land together and bought it at once after they experienced "the most magnificent sunset that turned the waterfront into 'liquid gold'." In their home, Larry managed to build a greenhouse to nurture his orchids; a wood-shop, a fly-tying station, TV den for all sports and “Classic Westerns,” and the all-important dock to fish for Red Drum and Flounder among other abundant aquatic life. The crabs often got the better half of his bait, but that was all part of the thrill of the chase.
A passionate outdoors person and conservationist, Larry was surrounded by his beloved hunting dogs most of his life, including Fritz, Reuben, Willie, and Toby. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, hiking, canoeing, camping and anything else, allowing him to experience the great outdoors. Two of his favorite annual fishing excursions included sharing a stunning lodgepole cabin with his fishing friends on Michigan's Au Sable River for almost 30 summers. In the fall, he would fish and float the Colorado River and several tributaries.
Culinary creations were chief among Larry’s many talents as he followed recipes from well over 300 cookbooks and had a penchant for large batches of Bolognese, Gumbo, Chili, Low Country Boil, and Paella.
Larry was preceded in death by his mother, Marjorie Peacock Lockwood in1991, his father Wallace Lockwood in 1997 and his sister Geraldine Oakley in 2022.
His immediate family, and granddaughters Katelyn Phillips (1996) and Isabel Butler (2004) will gather for a celebration of life in June 2026.
