Rush James “Jim” Johnson Jr., 80, passed away on July 28, 2026. He was born on March 4, 1946, in High Point, North Carolina, an Eagle Scout and graduated from High Point Central High School in 1964.
Jim proudly served in the United States Coast Guard as a radioman. He later attended High Point University and went on to build a 30-year career with North State Telephone Company, from which he retired. Following his retirement, Jim moved to Calabash, North Carolina, where he enjoyed his retirement years.
Jim had a special love for animals, particularly dogs and cats, and devoted many years to helping animals in need. Jim has a long history of volunteering for rescue shelter work. After volunteering with animal recues for several years, he began volunteering with DOG4U Animal Rescue in 2012. Beginning in 2013, he regularly transported animals to Massachusetts in connection with finding them new homes. Through his dedication and countless hours of volunteer service, Jim helped save more than 250 animals. His compassion and commitment made a lasting difference in the lives of both animals and the people who welcomed them into their homes.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Rush James Johnson and Selima G. Johnson, and his sister, Dianne Chalmers. He is survived by two nieces and three first cousins.
