Walter Norwood Flippin III, 73, of Wilmington, NC passed away peacefully on July 26, 2026, with his loving wife, Jane, and family by his side. Born on May 15, 1953, Walt lived a life defined by discipline, intellect, and
devotion to those he loved.
Walt graduated from the United States Naval Academy, Class of 1975, with honors in mathematics — a distinction that foreshadowed the sharp, steady mind he
would bring to every challenge that followed. Commissioned as a submarine officer, he went on to a distinguished career and retired as a Captain. Walt left
behind a legacy of service, precision, and quiet leadership that shaped everyone who served alongside him.
Following his Naval career, Walt graduated with a master’s degree in business
and brought that same discipline as a Senior Financial Advisor.
Outside of his career Walt was a lifelong golfer, loving the game and finding peace in honing his skills. He was an avid supporter of the UNCW Seahawk Club, especially golf and basketball.
As a member of St. Therese Catholic Church, he served as an eucharistic minister, altar server and lecturer.
Walt is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Jane E. Flippin (née Frank); his brother, Robert Flippin (Tatyana); his sister, Betsy Engel (Rob); his sisters-in-law; MaryAnn Thacker, Emily Scruggs (deceased), Susie Stevens (Bill), Diana Hoffmann, Ann Gold (Bryan) and many loving nieces and nephews.
Services will be Friday, July 31, 2026 at 15:00 at St. Therese Catholic Church, 209 South Lumina Avenue, Wrightsville Beach, NC 28480
A celebration of Walt’s life will be held on a future date.
