

Mr. William “Billy” Cheers, 83, of Shallotte passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2015, at SECU Hospice House of Brunswick. Born April 11, 1931, he was the youngest son of Roney and Madie White Cheers, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brother Roney W. Cheers, sister Mamie Ruth Cheers, brother-in-law Jimmy Sessoms, nephew Gary Cheers, and niece Sara Cheers.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 55 years Betty Lou Gore Cheers; sons Barry (Kim), Brad (Shelly), and Bryan (Cindy) Cheers and daughter Beverly (Tom) Butler; grandchildren Nicholas and Blythe Butler, and Zachary, Kayla, Gray, Bella, and Campbell Cheers; brother Elwood (Phyllis) Cheers of Shallotte, sister Audrey Cheers Sessoms of Wilmington, and sister-in-law Leona B. Cheers of Shallotte; nephews Jon, Jeff, and Cary Cheers of Shallotte and Jimmie Lee Sessoms of Wilmington; nieces Linda Callender and Cheryl Cheers of Shallotte, Becky Chadwick of Leland, Kathy Farmer of Knoxville, TN, and Melissa Kumpel of Wilmington.
Billy loved sports. A former baseball player, he coached National Little League Baseball for several years. He was also an avid fan of Shallotte High School sports and later, West Brunswick High School sports. His children and grandchildren shared that love, excelling in basketball, baseball, tennis, track, and cheerleading at WBHS, where he and his brother Roney rarely missed a sporting event and were notorious for both coaching from the stands and keeping the referees and umpires “straight”.
Billy was a former Shallotte police officer and later worked for and retired from the food services department of Brunswick County Schools. He was also a charter member of the Shallotte Moose and a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Shallotte.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 13, 2015, at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Joe Needham¬ and Rev.Frank Stanley officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Lehue-Chapel Hill Cemetery in Shallotte.
Pallbearers will be nephews Jon, Jeff, and Cary Cheers and great-nephews Chris and Alan Cheers and Martin Callender.
