Evelyn was born January 11, 1919 in the Town of Mosel to George and Ella Athorp. On a snowy December 31st, 1941 she was united in marriage to Edward J. Doherty at the home of her parents. The couple lived in Milwaukee during the war years, but returned to Plymouth in October of 1946 and bought a 26-acre farm. To supplement their income Evelyn worked as a waitress at the Foeste Hotel in Sheboygan. While living in Plymouth, Evelyn was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and Homemakers. In the late 1970’s they were in the process of selling the farm to the State Department of Transportation for the Highway 23/67 project when Edward died suddenly after heart surgery. Once the farm was sold, Evelyn followed through on their plans to build a new home, a duplex on Sheboygan’s south side where she lived until August of 2003.
During her years as a Sheboygan resident she worked for the VNA as a homemaker/companion, sold Avon Products and also volunteered at Sheboygan County’s Office on Aging, Memorial Hospital’s Eliza Prange Circle and belonged to a knitting club.
Evelyn was faithful member of Christ Lutheran Church where she served on the Mary Martha Guild and belonged to LWML.
She is survived by three sons, Donald A. (Terri) Doherty of Appleton, James E. (Katie) Doherty of Waukesha, and Randall D. Doherty of Sheboygan; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband, Edward, she was preceded in death by a brother, Stanley Athorp and a sister, Valeria Blanke Luckow.
