He was born on April 22, 1947, in Smyth County, VA and was the son of the late Charles W. and Hazel M. (Shelton) Hester.
Charles graduated in 1967 from Fort Defiance High School, where he enjoyed playing football. He furthered his education by attending Southwestern Virginia Business College and later graduated from the NCO Military Academy in Bad Tolz, Germany. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War Era, also working as a military policeman in Fort Bragg, NC.
He was a truck driver for numerous trucking companies, including Crosby Trucking, Houff Transfer and Heartland Express before retiring.
Charles took part in the Watchdog Program at Shenandoah Elementary School and was a mentor for many children, who often commented on how he went above and beyond for them. He was even called Grandpa by many of the students. He created an impact on many that even lasted past their high school graduation.
He was a member of the Lily of the Valley Church in Shenandoah.
On December 21, 1968, he married the former Betty D. Blizzard, who survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Cindy Dean of Shenandoah; and three grandchildren, Robbie, Missy and Mandy Dean, whom he adored.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, William “Billy” B. Hester; son-in-law, Robert Dean; and three sisters, Stella, Ina and Kathy.
Honoring his wishes, he will be cremated. A memorial service will be held 7pm, Friday, October 3, 2025, at Lindsey Kyger Funeral Home in Shenandoah, with Pastor Dickie Campbell officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-7, prior to the memorial service.
