Our wonderful and much beloved Jean Elizabeth Lucas, passed peacefully away Saturday morning, November 15, 2025, surrounded by family. Her 91-year-old body had fulfilled its earthly mission, and she passed on to meet her husband, Jerry Haskell Lucas, whom she married September 18, 1954, and preceded her in death on March 12, 2002.
Jean was born on August 22, 1934, in Rockingham Co. Jean ‘s life was marked by faith, kindness, and service to others. She passed away in the assurance of eternal life through Jesus Christ.
Jean graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1952 and soon after began working at the Knitting Mill of Shenandoah. Jean dedicated two decades of her professional life to BlueBell/VF
Wrangler. Even after retirement, her commitment to helping others continued through ten years of volunteer work at Page One of Shenandoah, VA.
Jean adored her family, and she treated her husband's nephews and nieces as if they were her own. She loved children and they loved her. Jean was an avid reader and enjoyed relaxing with a
good Harlequin Love Inspired Suspense Novel. She faithfully read her Bible daily. We’ll always remember her reading her Bible every night and praying a thankful-hopeful prayer.
Jean's warmth and giving extended beyond her professional and religious life into her personal relationships. She was loving, kind, and especially enjoyed traveling, including trips to Dollywood, Sevierville, TN, Fort Boonesborough State Park, Loretta Lynn’s Ranch, Strawberry Festival, Plant City, FL, St. Louis Arch, St. Louis, MO, and Graceland, Memphis, TN, with her niece, Nancy A. Lewis, who also cared for her in her later years. Her nearly 30-year custom of shopping on "Black Friday" with her nieces, Cindy, Virginia, and Nancy, earned her the nickname "Energized Bunny." Whether strolling the aisles during shopping or seeing new locations through travel, Jean embraced the simple pleasures of life with zest and grace.
In addition, to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, George Vernon and Gladys Comer Ferrell, and her brothers, Floyd Ferrell, Forrest Ferrell, Ralph Ferrell, and Guy Ferrell. Their memories remained close to her heart throughout her life.
Jean will be remembered for her generosity, dedication, and commitment, especially in caring for her husband over the course of more than ten years and her mother for two years. Her presence
warmed people around her and provided solace to those who knew her best. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
Funeral service will be conducted on Friday, November 21, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Lebanon Congregational Christian Church, 1030 Comertown Road, Shenandoah, VA. Family hour will take place one hour prior to the service at church, with Rev. Jim Harrison and Rev. Jim Martin officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
