Betty Jean Payton

Betty Jean Payton, age 85, of Bullitt County, Kentucky returned to her Heavenly Father on Thursday, June 12, 2025, with loving family by her side. She was born on April 10, 1940, in Douglas County, Illinois to the late Paul and Dorothy (Long) Redman. Betty was a member of Summitt Hills Baptist Church. Her home for the last 4 years was Sanders Ridge Health Campus in Mt. Washington, Kentucky, where she was taken excellent care of by the staff who became like her extended family. She loved plants and flowers, especially the perennials she grew in her yard, and was known for her baking skills where she put her heart into for her family. Betty enjoyed the potluck dinners at her church where everyone loved her summer salads. She enjoyed making various dishes for her loved ones, even when her health made it difficult for her. She was a selfless, giving woman who showed her love by her actions to those she held dear. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Patty Christman; husbands, Bernard Johnson and Glenn Payton; brother, Kenneth Wayne and sister, Thelma.

She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Mary Martin (Curtis), Gwinn Johnson and Toni Johnson (Kevin); sons, Johnny Johnson (Tammy) and Nathan Johnson (Sheila); son-in-law, David Christman; stepchildren, Nancy (Gene), Diane, Brenda, Ricky, Rusty and Reverend Mark (Tammie); best friend, Peggy (Gerry) and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, family and friends.

Funeral service will be conducted at 6:00 pm, Monday, June 23, 2025, in the chapel of Schoppenhorst, Underwood & Brooks Funeral Home (Preston Hwy. at Brooks Rd.). Betty’s family will accompany her to her final resting place of Bardstown Cemetery on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at 10:00 am. Family and friends may pay their respects on Monday, June 23, 2025, from 1:00 pm until the time of service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Hosparus Health and Alzheimer’s Association in Betty’s honor are appreciated.
