

She was one of ten children born to the late Anna Lee and Woodard Arnold.
She moved to Chicago at age 9 and began working in a shoe factory to help her parents. In Chicago she met and married Wavy Mayes and had two children: Mike and Shirley. They moved back to Kentucky and had two more children: Joe and Winona. As a single mother she raised four children. Although she obtained her Childcare License in Kentucky she found more joy caring for her grandchildren, close friends' children, and neighbors' children.
She was a long time member of Immanuel Baptist Church - teaching Preschool, Sunday School and Bible School. She obtained her driver's license in her 60's proving it is never too late to learn something new!
She was preceded in death by all 9 of her siblings, her parents, her son Michael Mayes and her husband and friend Arnold Taylor, with whom she spent many happy years farming with in Cave City Kentucky.
She is survived by her children Shirley Meredith (Danny), Joe Mayes (Debbie) and Winona Ridgway (Anthony), step-sons David Taylor (Brenda) and Ronnie Taylor (Pat), daughter-in-law Tina Mayes and 14 grandchildren: Steven (Jenny), Heath, Gary (Amanda), Michael (Jessica), Tiffany (Chris), Joshua (Alicia), Nick (Abbey), Alison (Andy), Kyle (Aileen), Alysa (Kyle), Mckenzie (Adam), Jonathon, Chris and Wesley.
She was preceded in death by two beautiful angel great grandchildren, Isabella and Ethan and survived by 15 great grandchildren: Gabrielle, Sophie, Tucker, Ava, Chloe, Lucius, Jacob, Caleb, Serenity, Broderick, Atticus, Carter, Jude, Kasen, Cohen, Eden and Harry and great, great grandchild Atlas.
Nothing was more important to Betty than her family and she was surrounded by all in the hours preceding her passing.
A visitation for Betty will be held at Hardy-Close Funeral Home 285 S. Buckman Street Shepherdsville, Kentucky 40165 on Saturday, March 21, 2026 from 11AM to 1:30PM. A funeral service will follow at 1:30PM. Betty will be laid to rest in Mount Washington Cemetery.
