Brenda Sue Dawson, 77, passed away on March 26, 2022 after a long battle with cancer. A native of Shepherdsville, Kentucky, Brenda was born on December 11, 1944 to Clifford and Elizabeth Lee. She met her husband, Bill, at 5 years old while they were both carrying pies at the farmers market, were high school sweethearts and they married shortly thereafter. They recently celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on February 1st. Together, they raised five children, which eventually led to her most favorite role- being a grandmother.
To her grandchildren (and many others), she was known simply and fondly as Grammy. The world’s best Grammy. As a devoted and doting grandmother, she spent thousands of hours at birthday parties and sporting events, baptisms and First Communions, graduations, and weddings, more often than not with a camera in hand. As she recently said “I’ve always been a great grandmother, but haven’t yet been a great grandmother.” When her first great-grandchild was born in December 2021, she finally got to be that, too.
Brenda will be remembered as the much-loved centerpiece of a large and ever- growing family. She enjoyed bringing people together and always welcomed anyone, whether they were family or not, to family gatherings. Her house was never too small for an extra card table during the holidays or at one of her popular bunco parties.
Her love and generosity extended beyond welcoming people into her house. Throughout the years, countless people were blessed to be the recipient of one of her handwoven baskets, handsewn bears welcoming the arrival of a new baby, or scrapbooks filled with her own photographs and made during one of her cherished scrapbooking retreats at Saint Meinrad.
Brenda was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Elizabeth; her daughter, Deanna; and grandchildren, Hannah and Taran.
Brenda is survived by her husband Bill; children, Glen (Kristin), Jenny (Erich), Brent, Chad (Janie); son-in-law, John (Colleen); 14 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
Her Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00am on Wednesday, March 30, 2022 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church (224 Abbott Street, Shepherdsville, KY. 40165) with burial to follow at Hebron Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 29, 2022 from 1:00pm until 8:00pm at Schoppenhorst, Underwood and Brooks Funeral Home (4895 N. Preston Hwy, Shepherdsville, Kentucky 40165). Expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Meinrad Archabbey (200 Hill Drive, St. Meinrad, Indiana 47577).
