Barbara Joyce Campbell, 83 years old died on January 26, 2019. Joyce battled strokes and dementia for the last few years of her life. She is survived by her loving husband, Glenn of 64 years, 5 children, Mike Campbell (Debra), Connie Hubbard (Doug), Vic Campbell (Diane), Kim Boggs (Dean), Tonya Taylor (Rick) and son-in-law, Billy Montgomery (Denna). She was blessed to continue her legacy with 10 grandsons, 2 granddaughters, and 17 great grandchildren. She is also survived by a numerous amount of family and friends she impacted throughout her life.
Joyce was born on November 12, 1935 in Louisville, KY to George and Hattie Mae Young. Joyce was the oldest of eight children, including 5 sisters, Phyllis, Marilyn, Carol, Bonnie, Janet, and 2 brothers Jimmy and Terry. Joyce graduated from DuPont Manual High School in 1953, and married her loving husband in 1954. Joyce’s father, George, passed away tragically when she was just a young adult. With her father gone, Joyce assisted her mother with raising some of her younger siblings. Being forced to grow up and mature so early in life, and many times having to sacrifice her wants so that her family never had to do without, Joyce became a strong woman and could do just about anything.
After graduating from high school, Joyce met and married her husband Glenn Campbell. It wasn’t always the easiest of times, but it was ALWAYS the best of times. Married for 64 years, Joyce and Glenn raised their 5 children with more love than could be contained to just their household. Because of that and their sense of adventure and love of family, there were always extra people at the Campbell House. Everyone from nieces and nephews, to cousins, and many friends spent many meals, family nights, vacations and time at the Campbell Household. There is a saying in the Campbell family that still lives on to this day, “Once we welcome you in, you are welcome for life.” Because she believed that until her last day, Joyce has left a legacy far too big for anyone to count.
Joyce influenced many people in her life but the most obvious are children and their families. Joyce started a Mother’s Day Out program at Arcade Baptist Church. During that time she was the Church Secretary, and a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher. She served as the Director of Cabbage Patch Settlement Day Care and opened Campbell's Child Care in 1985. In all these moments, moments that may have felt small and insignificant at the time, she was forever impacting the lives of children and their families. She was teaching them what real and genuine love and grace looks like.
When Joyce moved to Bullitt County she continued her work serving as teacher of Sunday School and Children’s Church for Summit Hills Baptist Church. There is no way we could ever fully see the impact Joyce had on hundreds of lives or the ripple effect that still radiates from her life today, but her love for God, experiencing His grace and wanting to share it with others, coupled with her willingness to serve the “least of these” has resulted in a life well lived, loved and shared for generations to come.
