He was born June 12, 1947, in Louisville, KY to Rudolph Hawkins Sr. and Mary Frances (Goodwin) Hawkins. He was a 1965 graduate of Shepherdsville High School and by his mid-twenties became a Vietnam Veteran in the U.S Army. Larry’s sense of purpose and need to protect led to serving the Bullitt County Sheriff’s Department, retiring as Chief Deputy, Car 2 in 2003. He was a member of the Bullitt County FOP and volunteered for Hope for Pets as he continued to support the community of Bullitt County.
Larry’s family imagines him sitting in his Heavenly recliner with his beloved animals including Tilly. He never missed a nap while watching NASCAR and he was at home when working in his garage or racing in Salem Motor Speedway. A hero to his family, but the first to say, “I’m no hero, my friends that didn’t come home are the heroes.”
He is survived by his wife Tina, may we all be lucky enough to love that strongly; his daughters, Amie Bell and Ann DeBlasi (Jim); his granddaughter, Angela Franke (Nathan); grandson, Sawyer DeBlasi; brothers, Rudolph Hawkins Jr. (Brenda) and Mark Hawkins (Donna); sister, Dana Cook-Pearson (Brian); sister-in-law, Cathy Marcum (Gary); brother-in-law, Steve Logsdon (Doris) and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph and Mary Hawkins and his son, Nick Hill.
Larry will always be missed deeply by his friends; may their stories always make us laugh until we cry.
Funeral service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 13, 2025, in the chapel of Schoppenhorst, Underwood and Brooks Funeral Home (Preston Highway at Brooks Road) with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens in Mt. Washington, KY. Friends may pay their respects on Thursday, June 12, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Friday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
