Adela Berger

Adela (Della) Berger age 101 of Shiner passed away December 16, 2016. Della was born in the Witting Community on July 19, 1915 to the late Thomas Steinocher and Mary Kalisek Steinocher. She was member of the St. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church and a homemaker.

She is preceded in death by husband Edwin F. Berger on June 20, 1999, 1 son-Edwin (Sonny) Berger Jr., 2 daughters-Delores Berckenhoff, Joyce Kram, 5 brothers and 4 sisters.

Della enjoyed several things in life – sewing, fishing, and polka music. She was well known in the Shiner area for being an excellent seamstress. She was able to look at a picture, make her own pattern, and sew the most popular styles. She was always very busy sewing for her own family including two wedding gowns, and thirty two bridesmaid’s dresses in a span of a few months in 1955 for her two oldest daughters.

She was also an avid fisherwoman, never missing the chance to sit by the cool creek waters on a hot summers’ day with a fishing pole in her hand.

Della loved dancing and listening to polka music. She never missed the polka show on the radio.

Della was an outstanding cook and baker. Her family (approximately 60 people) would not miss coming home to the farm for the holidays just for her turkey and dressing and kolaches. Their old country home bursting at the seams with laughter, children, and playing dominoes.

Della loved being with her grandchildren and to celebrate life with them as much as possible. She will be truly missed by her family

Della is survived by 2 daughters-Shirley Phillips and husband John, Darlene Pokluda and husband Patrick all of Shiner, 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren. The active pallbearers are-Robbie Duke, John Phillips III, Jeremy and Danson Bludau, Jake Berckenhoff and Ryan Mattiza with honorary pallbearers- the grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will begin at 5:00 pm Tuesday, December 20, 2016 followed by a Rosary at 7:00 pm being led by Father David Berger at Buffington Funeral Home-Shiner. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at the St. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church with Father Brian Heyer officiating.
