Buford was born October 9, 1930 at home in Gonzales County. He was the son of Willie and Emma (Vrazel) Dreyer
As a young man he worked farming and ranching in the pastures of his family’s land, usually on his favorite horse Claude with his father by his side. After his father’s unexpected death, he devoted his life to the care and welfare of his mother. He became a rural mail carrier and made a career of it for over 35 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, swimming at the river with his cousins, family gatherings at Kokernot and dancing to western music. He worked hard but also enjoyed life. He was a bachelor most of his early years until he met a Poteet-grown beauty at the Farmer’s Daughter Dance Hall. Buford and Joan were married March 18, 1983 and made their home at the Dreyer family homestead near the banks of the Guadalupe River. Together they raised two granddaughters as their own. He was a passionate believer in small town values and way of life. He served on the United Dr. Martin Luther Lutheran Church council, was a member of Hochheim AF&AM Masonic Lodge # 182 for over 50 years, and he was a member of The Order of the Sons of Hermann. He was a kind and generous man, funny and easy-going, a man of integrity, who loved God and his family. He adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and cherished the memories he created with them. He believed in hard work, firm handshakes and a man’s word. He lived an abundant and joyful life, loving every minute of it, especially with his Joan.
The family thanks Dr. Ralph Wagner and the Wagner clinic for the decades of care, the Helping Hearts family, Hospice of South Texas and Marsha Patek for the years of dedication to him and his family.
Buford is survived by his granddaughters Crystal Shimek and her husband, Dustin of Shiner, Texas, Priscilla Middlebrook of Austin, Texas, Danielle Garcia of Charlotte, Texas, step-daughters Susan Mann of Gonzales, Texas, Sandra Klatter and her husband, Michael of San Antonio, Texas, and 9 great grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Willie and Emma Dreyer and his loving wife of 34 years, Joan Locke Dreyer.
