Doris Marie Koliba

November 2, 1935February 14, 2018

The family of Doris Marie Sykora Koliba, of Cuero, TX, is saddened to announce her passing on February 14th, 2018 at 11:05 p.m. in Hermann Memorial Hospital in Houston, TX. Doris, also known as “Mimi” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, will be missed more than words can convey.

Doris was born to John Thomas Sykora and Christine Julie Sykora on November 2nd, 1935 in Penelope, TX. For most of her life, she resided in the Dallas area, until her marriage to Benjamin Louis Koliba in 2001, whereupon she relocated to Cuero, TX and lived the remainder of her long, happy life.

Doris is remembered as a paragon of grace, humility, and strength, raising three children and spoiling the grandchildren they gave her. Although she worked in the real estate industry until her retirement in 2001, Doris’ true passion was preserving the memory and culture of her ancestral homeland, the Czech Republic, as a member of the KJZT Catholic Czech Club of Dallas, where she served as a long-standing member and Treasurer, as well as the SPJST Lodge 84, which just celebrated her 75th year of membership. In 2008, Doris and Benjamin helped sponsor the construction of the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center, the lobby of which now bears their name. Doris was also Regent of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court #347 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Cuero, TX. As an Extraordinary Minister, she was a frequent visitor to the aging and infirm, who would receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion as a result of her efforts and unwavering sense of charity.

Doris is survived by her husband, Benjamin Louis Koliba, her brother, Richard John Sykora, by her three children, Jack Arnold Moffitt, Jr., Thomas Samuel Moffitt, and Chris-Ann Marie Moffitt Rotolo, her grandchildren, Jack Arnold Moffitt III, Jacob Aaron Moffitt, Rachael Anne Moffitt, Brett Thomas Moffitt, Kelsey Kirkland Moffitt, Ryan Michael Moffitt, and Alexandra Marie Moffitt. Doris was also blessed with four great-grandchildren who will also carry her memory forward: Jasper Hagen Moffitt, Beatrix Hagen Moffitt, Benjamin Oliver Moffitt, and Abigail Lynn Reamey.

A Rosary in Doris’ honor will be held on February 20th at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Cuero, TX, starting at 6 p.m.. A Funeral Mass for Doris will be on the following day, February 21st, at St. Michael’s, starting at 10 a.m., with a reception afterward in adjacent facilities. Afterward, Doris will be transported to Dallas and, following a Rosary and Memorial Service at Cavalry Hill Funeral Home at 2 p.m., February 22nd, laid to rest with her mother and father at Cavalry Hill Cemetery.

Doris was a special cousin. Family and her Czech heritage meant everything to her. I admired her for all the times she and Benny made our Sykora reunions . She would make it to so many events . She had many many friends. I could see Robert waiting for her as she entered Heaven and both are talking up a storm and doing a lot of laughing. She will be missed by many.
Due to illness, I will not be able to attend services but your family will be in my thoughts and prayers. Theresa and Bob Plsek

Doris was such a wonderful person that impacted many lives. I have great memories of working and playing at the Czech Club. While she was a hard worker and got a lot accomplished, she also liked have a fun time. I will always remember those fun times especially the dances and traveling. Now we have another angel in heaven to take of us. RIP dear friend! Love you!

Doris was an extremely gentle lady, very passionate about anything she took on. She welcomed me with open arms into the Catholic Daughters when we moved to Cuero. My heart is saddened, but I know she is in a better place and not suffering anymore. My deepest sympathy to all the family.

When I met Doris, she welcomed me with an open heart. She adored my son, her great grandson, and was always loving towards us. Although I didn't know her long, I feel a great loss in my life.
