Funeral Services are under the direction of Buffington Funeral Home in Shiner, Texas and will be held on Friday, February 23, 2018 at 10:00 am at Dr. Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Shiner, Texas with Reverend Elaine Gomulka officiating. Interment will follow at Shiner City Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, February 22, 2018 from 5:00 until 8:00 pm with a Prayer Service beginning at 7:00 pm at the Funeral Home.
Virgie was born on October 22, 1926 near Dreyer, Texas. She was the daughter of Emil and Selma (Gerdes) Heerssen. She grew up in a small community known as London outside of Corpus Christi. She attended grade school in London, and graduated from Corpus Christi High School. She met Roland John Knief, and they were united in marriage on June 9, 1944. They remained in Corpus Christi until 1957 when they moved to Gregory, Texas. Virgie went to work part-time after school and on Saturdays at age 13 at the Oriental Laundry until she graduated high school, and then she worked full-time as a Manager and Credit Manager for 27 years, afterwards she worked for Coastal Iron Works as an Assistant Manager and Credit Manager until her retirement in 1981. In 1986 upon Roland’s retirement, they moved to their new home outside of Shiner, Texas. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on June 9, 1994. Roland passed away after 51 years of a loving and caring marriage. Virgie and Roland enjoyed many years of playing dominoes, going to dances, and they were also active in different clubs. Virgie was a member of Sons of Herman Lodge #20 in Shiner, and Lodge #34 in Corpus Christi. She was President of the Women’s Committee of the Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce. She held all of the offices Corpus Christi Local and State Consumer Credit Executives Organization. Virgie was a very active member of the Dr. Martin Luther Lutheran Church, where she organized blood drives, and was on the church council for 13 years. She was a volunteer at the nursing home for many years, and enjoyed playing cards and dominoes with her friends.
Virgie is survived by Randall Roland Knief and his wife, Bobbye of San Antonio, Texas, Kenneth Lee Knief and his wife, Sandy of Victoria, Texas, Deborah Kay Whiteaker and her husband, Richard of Panama City, Florida, son-in-law James Miller, ten grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, who all loved her dearly and enjoyed visiting her. She also had numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; Emil and Selma Heerssen, her loving husband of 51 years; Roland Knief, daughter; Sheryl Lynn Miller, and one brother; Harold Emil Heerssen.
Pallbearers for Mrs. Knief will be; Ronnie Bruns, Don Maillet,Bill Koenning, Howard Gloor, AJ Jaks, and James Muehlstein.
