Wilbert Whimpy Bender

Wilbert August Bender "Wimpy" of Shiner, Texas passed away on October 2, 2011. Wilbert was born on March 10, 1921 in Shiner to the late Hedwig and Albin Bender. Wilbert served overseas in WWII and after coming home, he worked as a carpenter. Later, he joined Temple Lumber Company and worked there for 31 years. Wilbert was a member of the American Legion post 201 and a Life Member of the V.F.W. post 6209. He is preceded in death by his parents, his half brother: Eddie Bender, Brothers: Gussie, Ervin, Arthur, Victor and Walter and his sister: Lillie Hagendorf. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Janda Bender, daughters: Susan Sembera and husband Emil of Shiner, Debbie Helton and husband Kenneth of Victoria, Kimberly Peikert and husband Allen of Wharton, five grandchildren: Jeremy Sembera and wife Kristin, Jennifer Tanzillo and husband Mike, Brent Helton, Amanda Helton and Megan Peikert and one great-grandchild: Karden Sembera. There will be a rosary service on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at 7:00 PM at Buffington Funeral Home in Shiner. Funeral mass will be on Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at 10:00 AM at Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Shiner with Father Kirby Hlavaty officiating. Burial will follow at Shiner S.P.J.S.T. Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Buffington Funeral Home, 361-594-3352.
