Agnes Elizabeth Usie, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on March 8, 2023, at the age of 85. She was born on January 30, 1938, in Long Island, New York, to parents John Charles Butt and Elizabeth Violet Butt. Agnes adored her husband and mother; we can only imagine how happy she must be now that they are reunited.
Agnes was married to her loving husband, Lee Joseph Usie, for 66 years before his passing only 14 months ago. Together, they raised five children, Roslyn McCumpsey, Amy Snider, Barry Usie, John Usie, and Wes Usie, whom she loved dearly.
Agnes was a devoted mother who instilled in her children the values of love, family, and hard work. However, on many occasions, after being disciplined by their father, she would quietly slip behind her husband's back to tell her children how much she loved them. She was a constant source of support and encouragement for them throughout their lives.
Agnes was also a proud grandmother to fifteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. To Agnes, every person or child added by marriage meant that you were immediately grafted into the family. She cherished every one of them, as they brought her great joy and happiness. As a result, every room in her home has photos of her family on display.
At sixteen, she left New York and moved to South Louisiana. Not long after arriving there, she met her husband, fell in love, and was married on February 6 of the following year. Keep in mind this was the week after she turned seventeen, and she became a mother before she turned 18. So, in case you are counting the months, Roslyn's birthday is November 27 of the very same year, which was six weeks premature.
In March of 1965, at the age of 27, now with four children, Agnes and Lee moved to, of all places, Anchorage, Alaska. Life in Alaska at that time was not easy, and even though difficult, Alaska always held a special place in her heart. The cold weather may have played a role in the birth of their fifth child.
Agnes, with five children, was an amazing mother and a homemaker like the world may never witness again. Dinner, actually a feast, was on the table every night at the same time. The washing machine was always running, and the house was dusted and vacuumed on a daily basis.
Agnes' life became brand new when she and her husband found Jesus in 1981. From that moment on, life at the Usie home was very different. Agnes always had her bible open and would even place bible tracks in the bathroom for her kids to read, hoping they would discover the same new life she had found.
Agnes had a quiet, kind, and generous spirit. The family was truly the primary thing that was important to her. She had a great sense of humor, and even though she rarely shared jokes, she always loved a joke or kind words. Her love for her family was unwavering, and she was deeply loved by all who knew her.
Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will deeply miss Her. Her legacy of love, kindness, and compassion will live on, inspiring others to live their lives with grace and generosity.
A Celebration of Life for Agnes will be held Sunday, March 19, 2023 at 2:00pm at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation will be held prior from 1:00pm until 2:00pm. Interment will immediately follow at Centuries Memorial Park.
