Bernice was born in Shreveport on April 14, 1945, to parents Edgar and Blanche Speakes. A native of Keithville, she devoted her life to her family as a compassionate and caring wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She graduated from Woodlawn High School and soon after married her husband of 55 years, Keith “Noo Noo” Brossette, and they began their adventures together as a Navy family in Key West, Fla., and Boston, Mass., before returning to Springridge to make a home to raise their children.
One of Bernice’s greatest joys was teaching her children how to be self-sufficient, to always strive for more, and she did this through her life-long passion for 4-H. She always helped her children with projects such as raising animals, sewing and cooking, where instead of using a cookbook recipe she helped with “trial and error” to create the perfect dish. The education she imparted on her children of how to live and prosper on a farm are lessons they still use and have passed down to their children.
Momeaux’s home was a place where the door was never locked and there was always a warm, home-cooked meal for all who came to visit. She was the mother who was always invited to sit around the kitchen table with the kids to play cards, pass gossip or give life lessons. She was never short of stories, whether relaying memories from the past or creating fairy tales for her grandchildren - the “ Four Hobos.”
Bernice also took great pride in her professional career as the Civil Department Manager for the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office and developed many life-long friendships during her tenure with the department.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, step-father Louis Jergensen, sister-in-law Sherry Speakes and nephew Richard Speakes, Jr.
Cherishing her memory is her husband Keith; children, Lydia Roberts and husband Carlton; Annie Harbison; Bo Brossette and wife Mistie; and Sylvia Ingram and husband Mike; grandchildren, Josh Folks; Jake Folks; Dylan Brossette and wife Jami; Lauren Hampton; and Megan Harrison; great grandchildren Alden and Everett Brossette; sisters, Jeanette Richards and husband Larry, Delores Elliott and husband Bill; brothers, Thurman Speakes and wife Chris; Homer Speakes and wife Sunan; Richard Speakes, Sr. and wife Gere; David Speakes and wife Maggie; and a host of other family and life-long friends.
A celebration of life will be held at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home – Shreveport, with visitation on July 12, 2021 from 5 – 7 p.m. Funeral Services will be July 13, 2021 at 10:00 am with internment following at Keithville Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Josh Folks, Jake Folks, Dylan Brossette, Bill Elliott, Jr., Todd Strealy, and Zack Brobst.
Bernice’s greatest honor was giving her life to Christ at the age of nine at Mount Washington Baptist Church and then spent her life as a living testimony to his Mercy and Grace. She and Keith raised their family in Community Bible Church in Keithville, and later in life she became a faithful member of Summer Grove Baptist Church.
The family wishes to thank Brenda Clark and Sandy Clark for the love and care they gave Momeaux in her final years.
“Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in paradise,” Luke 23:43.
