Charles (Chuck) Newhouse passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2020. He was born March 26, 1926 in Flemington, West Virginia to a coal miner, Julian Newhouse and his wife Iris. After graduating from Flemington High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served as a ball turret gunner on a B-17 airplane in WWII. He met his future wife while stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base.
He had various careers in sales from selling life insurance to selling lubricants. He loved selling and seeing people so much, that he sold lumber and building materials out of his backyard.
He was an avid reader. He loved writing poems and stories and has left behind a huge collection of them. He was in church every Sunday until he could no longer drive. He was known for handing out dollar bills to kids at church because he had come out of such poverty. In his earlier days he taught Sunday School and sang in the church choir.
His greatest joy was his four grandchildren and spending time with them. He was creative with ways to entertain them. A highlight of his life was being reunited with the pilot with which he flew in the B-17 in the war. Their reunion was 61 years after the war.
Chuck was preceded in death by his wife, Janie Newhouse; his parents; and two sisters. Left to cherish his memory are his children: Judy Newhouse Greer and husband Marvin, CK Newhouse and wife Betty, Tim Newhouse and wife Lore; grandchildren: Jason Greer and wife Jenny, Kyra Leigh, Chris Scott, and Nick Newhouse and wife Caitlyn. He is also survived by one sister, Annabell Coluzzi; nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Chris Bihm, Administrator for The Guest House and all the nurses and CNAs that loved and cared so beautifully for him.
The family will have a private graveside service but we will also have a memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
