Dorothy Cohen Chaffin passed away peacefully at 12:17 AM on the morning of June 10, 2018. She was born in Fort Worth, Texas, on January 3, 1926, and grew up there. In 1952 Dorothy and her family moved to Shreveport, where for many years she and her husband, Woody Chaffin, managed and operated the 1950s classic Tic Tok Grill on Greenwood Road. Dorothy was also a long-time telephone operator - beginning a new career in the late 1960s - until she retired from the Bell South division of AT&T in 1989. She had many close friends in Shreveport from her days at the Tic Tok and Bell South.
Dorothy was a devoted mother who faithfully attended her sons' sporting events in Shreveport while they were growing up. The family lived for many years at 2633 Bibb Street, where she continued to reside until 2004 when she moved to Houston to be closer to her sons and grandchildren. As a young mother, Dorothy often walked her sons to school at Werner Park Elementary. In later years, she would make many a trip to Midway Jr High School and Fair Park High School. During the years her sons were attending Louisiana Tech, she would often be a gracious hostess to their many friends brought home for weekend visits and great home cooking. After the boys graduated from Louisiana Tech and moved away from Shreveport, Dorothy loved to play cards with her girl friends at SPAR. And she loved her cane pole fishing, which she often did after school and later in life together with husband Woodrow Ake, with whom she spent many happy years until his death in 1999. Special recognition goes out to Jean Brown, Rita Price, and Diana Adair, who were her best buddies. Dorothy was a loving and devoted grandmother and great-grandmother, who will be truly missed by all her grandchildren.
Dorothy is survived by her three sons William (Bill) Chaffin, Robert (Bob) Chaffin, and Walter Chaffin, all of whom reside in Houston, Texas, where Dorothy spent her last few years in retirement at the Seven Acres Jewish Senior Care facility. Dorothy is also survived by her three daughters-in-law: Marcia Chaffin, Enya Chaffin, and Barbara Chaffin; eight grandchildren: Josh Chaffin, Brent Chaffin, Lindsay Chaffin Lariviere, Casey Chaffin, Angela Chaffin, Allen Chaffin and Andrew Chaffin; and one great-grandson, Mark Lariviere. In addition, survivors include nephews Mark Abramowitz, David Oremus, and Jeffry Cohen, niece Joyce Abramowitz, and sister-in-law Lee Cohen. Dorothy was preceded in death by her two sisters and brother, Esther Cohen, Marian Cohen Abramowitz, and Abe Cohen, respectively.
The family would also like to acknowledge the wonderful and sensitive care consistently provided by aide Princhelle Taylor in Dorothy's declining years.
Visitation, funeral services, and interment will be at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home & Cemetery located at 8801 Mansfield Road in Shreveport. Services are scheduled for Saturday, June 16 at 1:00 PM, with a reception to follow immediately after services. Graveside service with immediate family attending will follow the reception activities.
