George Marion Bloomingdale, Jr. went to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 17, 2020 surrounded by family at home. A celebration of a life well lived will be held at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home in Shreveport, LA on Friday, October 23, 2020 at 12 p.m.
George was born on July 28, 1929 in West Buxton, Maine. At age 17, he joined the Navy where he served 21 years. He was a member of the famous USS Triton submarine four of those years and made a round the world cruise eighty-four days submerged following Magellans route. George retired from the Navy in 1967 at which time he and his wife Grace Perry Bloomingdale settled in Shreveport, LA. George married Grace from Orange, TX in 1951 and they had one son, George M. Bloomingdale, III. George and Grace were married for 51 wonderful years. A year after she passed away, he married another lovely lady, Freida Carroll.
He was called into the ministry at age 40 and was a licensed Church of God minister. He pastored churches in Rayne, Abbeville and Shreveport, Louisiana. He also served as interim pastor in several churches in the area. He was a Sunday school teacher for the Senior Adult Class at Southpark Church of God for 20 years. George loved ministering to the sick in hospitals, nursing homes, or at other homes while witnessing and praying for them. George contributed to the lives of many and was always willing to help anyone in need. He loved giving his testimony of what God did for him.
George was preceded in death by his parents, George and Bertha Bloomingdale; his first love, Grace Bloomingdale; three sisters, Jane Rapier, Mary Magdalene Charlwood and Leah Bridges; and one half-sister, Eldora Willis.
He is survived by his wife Freida, his son, George III and wife Kathleen; granddaughter, Tamra Grace; step-daughter, Vickie Roark and husband, Luke; two step-grandsons, Bryan Roark and wife Debbie, Jonathan Roark and wife Angela; three step-great grandchildren, Jacob Roark, Brooklynn Roark and Chloe Roark; one sister, Inez Bloomingdale, along with 29 nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held before the service begins from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held immediately following at Centuries Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers will be Bobby Smith, Roland LaCaze, Jack Miller, Luke Roark, David Butler and Jimmy Davis.
The family would like to thank those from Heart of Hospice who took such great loving care of George over the past six months.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Smoky Mountain Children’s Home (Church of God Orphanage) P.O. Box 4391, Sevierville, TN 37864; St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital in Memphis, TN or Shriner’s Hospital for Children in honor of George.
