Geraldine Sabin

Gerry was born on May 1, 1934, in Superior, Wisconsin, to Sven Edwin Sutherlund and Selma Elvira Sofia “Sally” Johnson. She was the second of four children—Lavaun, Ronnie, and Robert—and a cherished member of the Sutherlund family. Gerry and her siblings grew up in the countryside of northern Wisconsin, surrounded by a large extended family and countless cousins, creating memories that would last a lifetime. For more than 90 years, Gerry and her sister Lavaun shared an extraordinary bond. The two were the closest of companions and lifelong best friends, speaking every day and sharing in life’s joys and sorrows.

Gerry was married to Benjamin “Ben” Kolbein Fisketjon for 30 years. Later, she built another beautiful chapter in her life when she married Virgil Dale Sabin in 1986. Gerry was known for her impeccable sense of style, her vibrant personality, and her ability to light up any gathering. She created a warm and welcoming home in her charming cottage near Lake Superior, where her nieces—and later her grandnieces—made some of their most treasured childhood memories. Throughout her life, she held many roles, but some of her fondest memories were from her years working at Hill Avenue Dentist in Superior alongside supportive colleagues who became dear friends.

Gerry kept her zest for life, finding joy in simple pleasures, for almost 92 years. She loved playing the penny slots, had an undeniable sweet tooth, and in her later years became an avid puzzler. She was also lovingly known as “Nanny” to her cherished furry grandchildren, whom she spoiled endlessly. Gerry was a true survivor, overcoming both breast cancer and a liver transplant with remarkable strength, always maintaining her radiant spirit and deep love for life.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Ben and Virgil; her sister, Lavaun Marley; and her brothers, Ronnie and Robert.

She is survived by her nieces, Gerry Marley and Cheryl Foss; her nephew-in-law, Jeffrey Foss; her grandnieces, Kristin, Taylor, and Madison Foss; and numerous extended family members and friends who will miss her dearly.

A graveside service will be held at a later date to celebrate and honor her beautiful life.
