Guy Russell Friend, a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 3, 2025, at the age of 102. A World War II veteran, Guy led a life that was marked by service, kindness, and a passion for the things that brought him joy. He was an electrician by trade and a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) for more than 70 years. Through his work and dedication, he left an indelible mark on the community, always with a smile on his face and a willingness to help others.
Beyond his impressive work ethic, Guy was a man who found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He had an enduring love for travel and spent many years exploring new places, each adventure adding to the richness of his life. But no matter where he went, his home was where his heart truly lay. He took immense pride in his yard and garden, finding solace in nurturing plants and flowers with his own hands. His garden was a reflection of his own spirit—steady, patient, and full of life.
Guy also had a deep love for reading, immersing himself in books that sparked his imagination and fed his curiosity. His interests were wide-ranging, and he could often be found with a good book in hand, enjoying the quiet moments of the day. His love of reading was complemented by his playful side—he was a master at the game of dominoes, and his family will fondly remember the hours spent around the table, laughing, chatting, and competing with him.
Family was the cornerstone of Guy’s life. He was a devoted husband to his late wife of 66 years, Elizabeth, and together they built a life full of love and mutual respect. As a father, Guy was a rock for his children—Janet, Sharon, David, and Mary—always there with words of wisdom, encouragement, and support. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy. He had a special bond with each of them and took great delight in their accomplishments and milestones.
Guy’s generosity extended beyond his family. He was a man with a kind and compassionate heart, always looking out for others, whether it was offering a helping hand or simply lending an ear to listen. His sense of humor, strong work ethic, and unwavering faith in the good of others made him a beloved figure in his community.
He is survived by his daughters, Janet Friend, Sharon Cefalu (Tim), and Mary Brown (Murray); his son, David Friend; his sisters, Shirley Birdinsky and Donna Kutcher; and his grandchildren, Dr. Christopher Cefalu (Audrey), Dr. Jeremy Cefalu (Laura), and Sean Cefalu. Guy was also a proud great-grandfather to Elizabeth, Henry, Benjamin, Jon William, and Charlotte Cefalu. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Elizabeth Friend; his father, Guy T. Friend; his mother, Irene Friend; his brother, Walter Friend; and his sisters, June Flood and Betty Wood. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who will carry his memory with love.
A visitation for Guy will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home, 8801 Mansfield Road, Shreveport, LA 71108, followed by a celebration of life service at 11:00 AM.
Guy will be laid to rest in Centuries Memorial Park, Tower II Garden, Lot 118, Space 4. Serving as pallbearers will be Tim Cefalu, Murray Brown, Donald Keenan, Dr. Christopher Cefalu, Dr. Jeremy Cefalu, and Sean Cefalu.
