James S. Goins Jr.

James Spencer Goins, Jr. of Shreveport, Louisiana passed away unexpectedly on February 10, 2015 at age 66. He was born May 1, 1948 in Ruston, Louisiana to the late James Spencer Goins and Patsy Ruth Goins Coggiola.

Jim was first and foremost a husband. On November 8, 1969 he married the love of his life, Martha Whitaker Goins. He met her while on opposite sides of a double date, and he would later say he knew within minutes, “I was with the wrong girl.” Over the 45 years of their marriage, Jim never missed an opportunity to tell Martha he loved her and she was beautiful.

Jim was also a businessman. After graduating from Louisiana Tech University in 1973, he owned several different businesses before he joined the family at Pat Goins Beauty School where he eventually became the Vice President and operated six schools in Louisiana and Arkansas. A second-generation beauty education champion and leader in his field, he was the past Chairman of the Commission for National Accrediting Association of Career Arts & Sciences (NAACAS) where he served for 15 years in various leadership capacities. In recognition of his service to the industry, he was awarded the prestigious N.F. Cigmaglia Award in 2013, just as his mother was in 1997.

But most endearingly, Jim was a father. His four daughters – Leslie, Lindsey, Laura and Lacey – were true Daddy’s girls and the lights of his life. He will be remembered not just for always being there for their major milestones, but even more so for the little things: their regular family dinners, long country drives and everyday phone calls that always ended with “I love you, baby.”

His final chapter was that of “Granddaddy.” He doted on his five grandchildren, giving them anything they wanted – from sips of coke to popsicles for breakfast. He was almost as generous to his two Yorkies, who always held a soft spot in his heart.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, James Spencer Goins, Sr. and wife Earlene and Patsy Ruth Post Goins Coggiola and husband Larry, in addition to his brother, Billy Goins. He is survived by his wife, Martha; daughters Leslie Dean, Lindsey Sikorski (Steve), Laura Rushing (Jason), and Lacey Chreene (Andy); grandchildren Abigail Leslie Dean, Spencer Gabriel Dean, John Robert Dean, Amelia Ruth Sikorski, and Kaylee Ann Rushing; his brother John Goins; his sister-in-law Ellyce Thomas (Bob) and nephew William Post Goins, II (Tricia) and their children Will and Sophia.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 14 at 1 p.m. at Broadmoor Baptist Church. Immediately following the service there will be a reception hosted by the family.
