Janette was born on October 11, 1945, in Pleasant Hill, Louisiana, to Robert Lee Free and Louvenia Watson.
Janette was an amazing and loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She was the kind of person who found joy in caring for others and creating a warm, welcoming home for the people she loved. She enjoyed cooking, photography, floral arrangements, and gardening, and she loved spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing basketball with them as they grew up, drawing from her own experience as a high school basketball athlete.
Janette attended Summer Grove Baptist Church, where she enjoyed worshiping and being part of the church community. She proudly dedicated 34 years of her life to AT&T before retiring.
She is survived by her sons, Richard L. Hammond and Jason C. Hammond; her grandchildren, Nicholas L. Hammond and wife, Catherine, Alec C. Hammond, Jillian T. Hammond; and many extended family members and friends who were blessed to know and love her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Lee Free and Louvenia Watson; her brothers, Robert Laverne Free, Douglas Free, and Freddie Free; and her grandson, Christopher L. Hammond.
Janette's love and presence will be deeply missed. Her family will forever carry the memories of her laughter, her love, her generosity, and the countless moments she shared with them. Though she is no longer with us, the love she gave so freely will continue through the lives of her children, grandchildren, family, and friends.
Honoring Janette as pallbearers are Richard L. Hammond, Jason C. Hammond, Nicholas L. Hammond, and Alec C. Hammond.
Christopher L. Hammond will also serve as a pallbearer in spirit, helping carry his grandmother home and remaining forever in our hearts.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Storrs family, her neighbors, for their kindness, friendship, and care, as well as the Jackie Boyd family for their loving care and support.
A visitation will be held on September 11, 2026 from 10:00 AM–12:00 PM at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home, 8801 Mansfield Road, Shreveport, Louisiana 71108, followed by a celebration of her life at 12:00 PM. She will be laid to rest at Centuries Memorial Park, 8801 Mansfield Road, Shreveport, Louisiana 71108.
